Jazz Shuffle

This jazz drum lesson looks at a jazz beat called the jazz shuffle. Shuffle is an alternative term for swing, which means that the off-beat is delayed slightly so that notes are spaced unevenly in a long - short - long - short pattern. Shuffle or swing rhythms are usually based in triplets. The term shuffle comes from the repetitive, uneven nature of the rhythm.

In jazz drumming a shuffle refers to a groove where the swung off-beats are emphasized and there is a strong back beat on beats two and four. The basic jazz shuffle is shown below.
